Brought Etta & James photos. Decorated bulletin boards. Brought more clothes, jewelry, and a photo book I started. Etta had physical therapy- didn’t like it. Aggravated by the exercises and questions. Asked the PT to come up with some new stuff to do. She went for a walk using a walker and a support belt. James did some PT but would not do activities outside of the room. Otherwise, very cordial most of the time. Wants to eat in his room and wants the A/C off, lights off, etc. Constantly asks for food- especially bananas.
Etta said she had some running around to do and customers were waiting at home. Wanted her things piled up so she was ready when it was time to go. Said she and James would be back but thought they would not likely get the same room again. Except for the Tuesday night in the ER, neither has asked for or about Preston. Even then, Etta only said, “I let Preston live with me. I don’t want him to be mad at me.” I assured her no one was mad at her and that she had done nothing wrong.
Etta told me she was up most of the night because the phone kept ringing. Thinks she has been there 3 or 4 days and will be leaving soon. Though she doesn’t specify where she is going.
Met with Social Worker, business office, nurses, PT. Still need to complete admissions paperwork.
Arrived at 12:30p, left at 2:45 pm.
Returned at 5:30p with Josh, Hailey, my parents. Mike is out of town. Visited with both until 7p.
Etta recognized Dad but then a few moments later asked who was standing beside me. As soon as I reminded her that I brought dad, she was quick to say, “Of course, I couldn’t see him.” Etta had written a note to James in large child like handwriting. It said, “Let’s go for a short walk.” When mom asked her about the note, she said, “Oh Jeannie sent that to me.” I was standing right beside her at the time and didn’t refute her claim.
She told me that she spoke to the chef about his cooking. Said she told him that it wouldn’t be bad if he knew how to season the food with a little salt and fatback. LOL. I don’t think that will happen in the nursing home. Perhaps she can have some “no salt” seasoning- I will ask.
At one point, Daddy was not with us in the dining room with Etta. I soon discovered he had gone back to their room and was with his father. James was pleasant and showed an interest in daddy being there- smiling, asking questions, etc. For the first time in his life, James told daddy that he loved him. Could Dementia allow someone to speak what dwells the corners of the heart or nothing like that at all? These days much is confused and forgotten, but this moment will dwell in our hearts forever.
