Etta's memory is unpredictable, much like her personality! I had been at the beach for several days attending a conference the week of her birthday. My plan was to return to town on the 5th, her 85th birthday. Since she's usually confused about the season, the date, and even the time of day, I was hoping she wouldnt realize it was her birthday until I arrived later that day. I spoke to the nurses in her unit and based on the fact that she had not said anything about her birthday, it was concluded that she likely didn't realize it was her day. I was anxious to visit her- a combination of having been away for a few days and wanting to be the one to make the day special in some small way.
Upon my arrival that afternoon, I could immediately tell by the expression on her face that she absolutely knew it was her birthday! She looked at me as if to say, "So, do you have something to say?" When I asked her if she knew what today was, she said, "Of course I do...who forgets their birthday?" LOL! She surprised me once again! While I was waiting to see if she would forget, she was waiting to see if I would remember! I was happy to lavish her with hugs, kisses, some new jewelry, and a beautiful new scarf. She was grateful but did say, "I think I have enough scarves now." Even at 85 and evn with Alzheimer's, Etta is still the same wi
